Day 12 - "My Favorite Things" by Lorrie Morgan - 25 Days of Christmas Angst

Pink Rose And Buds, Color
A few of my favorite things: My girls (above),
dinner out with family and friends, watching a Packer
game with my family, iced coffee, the end of a work day...
Most people are introduced to "My Favorite Things" through The Sound of Music.  The song was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for this musical in 1959.

In the 1965 film version, Maria (played by Julie Andrews) sings about her favorite things to help calm the nerves of Captain von Trapp's children during a thunderstorm.  You can hear her performance here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33o32C0ogVM.

I, however, first encountered the song through Lorrie Morgan's 1993 Christmas themed music video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXiTIsB_ADQ.

In the music video, a homeless woman enters a building through an unlocked side door and starts singing this song as she enters the ornate, marble, foyer.  As she falls asleep she dreams of her childhood and of dancing on the stage with a handsome man.  At the end of the video, a watchman wakes her up and makes her leave.

Morgan is far from the first to make the connection between this song and Christmas.  In 1964, a year before the film version of the musical was released, jazz/pop singer Jack Jones released a Christmas album with this song on it.

I appreciate the contrast between the performance of Andrews and Morgan.  Morgan has a slightly fuller and rougher voice while Andrews presents the song with a very clear and bright tone.  Both voices fit their varied purposes.

In the musical, Andrews' character is trying to elevate the mood of the upset children.  Morgan's version serves as the musical accompaniment to the sad visual story being told in the video.  Both voices are powerful and both performances are backed with orchestrations.  Again there is a contrast.  The music for the Andrews version is brighter and upbeat while the Morgan version is slower and more somber.  One thing that is obviously changed is that the violin plucking that adds a cheerful accent to each stanza is removed in the Morgan version.

The version that Morgan performs also trims down the first two stanza when repeated.  Most likely this is done to emphasize the images that are more Christmas like.  While some might associate  "schnitzel with noodles" or "crisp apple strudels" with Christmas, most people probably do not.

Not many songs can fit equally well at Christmas time and in the middle of summer.  One of my favorite things is escaping into a story.  A song that can be part of stories so varied is also one of my favorite things.

My Favorite Things
as performed by Lorrie Morgan

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens,
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens,
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things.

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels,
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles,
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things.

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes,
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes,
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the dog bites,
When the bee stings,
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad.

Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things.

Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favorite things.

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes,
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes,
Silver white winters that melt into springs,
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the dog bites,
When the bee stings,
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad.

I think this song, more than any other, expresses the feelings that cause all of the angst. As we grow up or grow older and change it seems the world changes more.
