Mob Mentality

An article on Slate titled "Art Mobs: Can an online crowd create a poem, a novel, or a painting?" caught my attention. As a teacher I ask my students to do creative, group-developed projects quite often. And it works. Of course there is a much higher level of communication with my students in the same room than people across the globe. It does, however, make me stop and question the true validity and purpose of such projects. Maybe this is just something to keep in mind as a demonstration of the true importance of communication within a group. Or to say it another way, if there is a group consciousness (or collective memory) it is amplified by face to face interactions.
